Elton John, “My High-Flying Bird”

Damn, isn’t that just gorgeous music? From Elton John, surely one of the rock and roll greats. “My High-Flying Bird” from Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player, released in 1973. It’s incredible that he released two great albums that year, when I was a sophomore in high school and not even really into rock and roll. And one of the albums was a double album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road! So really he released three great albums in only a year! How did he do it?

His piano playing was great and so was his voice. He and Bernie Taupin wrote all the music and lyrics. Taupin was just a songwriter. He never played an instrument.
