Yes, the soldiers came into the square shooting, but all the students were gone by then. Also the convoys of soldiers had been attacked by gangs of workers who lynched soldiers and set their bodies on fire. So the soldiers were mad.
The idiot supposedly stopping the tank by standing in front of it is a bullshit picture. First of all, the tank was leaving the Square, not coming into it. The tank’s taking off, so why stop it? How is the tank taking off and heading home some dangerous thing that needs to be thwarted. Also that guy was just some pedestrian who was walking across the street at that time. But he decided to stand in front of the tank like a moron. People on both sides of the street were calling him an idiot and yelling at him to get out of the way and let the tank go by.
The original students wanted a laissez faire radical free market Milton Friedman style economy with most everything privatized. The model was Hong Kong. They were obviously contras who had to be stopped. The leadership had made many trips to the US to be groomed for this color revolution.
The purpose of this color revolution was to overthrow the Chinese government. Hence the government had a right to crack down on it.
The government led the protestors stay out there for a long time without doing anything about it while debating the issue behind closed doors. They tried for a long time to reason with the demonstrators but they would not negotiate on anything. Eventually the government got tired of waiting and caved in.
Most of those killed were workers. Many were armed and this is the group that had attacked and lynched soldiers.

“Tank man” sounds like more of a deer in the headlights than a “rebel.” Most articles have him as an unknown man of mystery. Nice to get some details.
Like in Schindler’s List, the Nazi girl says, “Bye, Jews” sarcastically to Jews boarding a train. Leaving is usually a good thing.
In these contexts, it’s always a good thing.
