The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Yep, the classic Sergio Leone film from 1966. One of the original Spaghetti Westerns with Ennio Morricone’s classic score, some of the simplest but finest music ever made. Clint Eastwood was absolutely superb in the main role. I never knew he was so good. Highly recommended for anyone on here if you like Westerns. This is one of the greatest Westerns ever made! Ely Wallach and Lee Van Cleef are also superb in the two other titular roles. This movie is actually too good, assuming that’s even possible.

  1. Never knew Sergio Leone was the one that did “Duck you sucker” with James Coburn and Rod Steiger about revolutionary Mexico in the early 1900’s until a few years ago too. Eastwood and Leone did those “spaghetti” westerns together a few times.

    1. There was a trilogy – the Dollars trilogy. A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Eastwood is in all three of those. Van Cleef is also in For a Few Dollars More, this time as Eastwood’s character in this movie, the bounty hunter. A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly are said to be the best. For a Few Dollars More is also excellent but not quite as good as those two.

Another Leone movie, Once Upon a Time in the West, not part of this trilogy, appeared several years later. It’s probably even better than any of the trilogy movies and it makes many “Best Movies Ever” lists.

Sergio Leone was a superb director, a genius.

    1. I never thought Eastwood was much of an actor. He also played this hardass, taciturn, tough guy role as in Dirty Harry. But damn he did a fine acting job in this movie. This movie made me realize how good he really is. And you are right. Eastwood’s best movies may be his Westerns. He’s such a natural fit.

      1. Alot of people were pissed at Eastwood for doing that movie about WWII as seen through eyes of the Japanese. Right wingers, WWII participants said it was an outrage that Eastwood tried to portray the Japanese as objects of sympathy during the war when they were inhuman brutal Fascist torturers down with Hitler and Mussolini. That movie came out in the earlier 2000’s. Can’t remember the name of it.

        1. Japanese were more cruel than the Colonial Whites that came before them. Much of what they did would disgust most Westerners. In my view, nearly every group’s worthy of sympathy though. Only some individuals are damnable. I watched a Samurai documentary recently. On the World stage I think they are overhyped. They were among the greatest warriors in East Asia and among the cruelest as well.

          1. Yes, it is The Outlaw Josey Wales. That is supposed to be an excellent movie.

    2. And an Eastwood film never mentioned much: ” Play Misty for Me” with Jessica Walters in a great performance playing a crazy ass stalker b—h. Directed by Eastwood.
