Just Watched LA Confidential

Based on James Ellroy’s novel of the same name. I’ve never read any of his stuff, but I’m told that he’s great.

Quite a movie!

Anyone here watched it?

Interestingly, True RomanceMulholland Drive (had to be), Se7en (believe it or not!), and LA Confidential (duh) were all set in LA! Of course, I am an LA man myself, born and raised. I was born in Inglewood, believe it or not. That was when it was livable, before it become Inglewatts.

Even after it became Inglewatts, we still went to the LA Forum there all the time to see rock concerts. Also the LA Lakers always played at the forum. It was Black and dangerous when we went to concerts there, but you just parked in the parking lot, and it wasn’t that big of a deal.

Just try not to get out of your car on the way in or out if you can help it. You really don’t want to be in the hood after dark. I’ve been in the hood many times in daytime, mostly driving but sometimes even walking (!) around. It’s not particularly dangerous but I didn’t go far away from my workplace. There are some crackhead women out there, but they’re not really dangerous. They’re just nuts.

Never had any problems walking or driving around the hood in the daytime all my years except for one time when I was a boy, and that was in Watts.

I did go to Lynwood at night once though. I used to drive around there all the time ion daytime to go out to get lunch. It was nothing.

But once I went there after dark for some insane reason, and I was absolutely terrified. I was at a red light, and the guys in the car in front of me all turned around and looked right at me. They were all Black or Hispanic or mixed (that’s quite a common mix in the hood nowadays, especially in Lynwood). The looks on their faces were of stark, homicidal hostility and perhaps incredulity that I was even there at all.

Seriously, don’t go to the hood at night if you can help it. Day and night are two different worlds in the hood. One’s doable but not optimal by any means (mostly bad scenery), but the other is sheer, utter terror.

      1. I did, in the ’90s itself I think. As an adolescent, I had a big crush on Kim Basinger. Apparently she was already 45 or something at that time, but she looked so super-hot.

        1. Did you like it? Damn she’s hot. First movie I have ever seen with her in it. Damn good actress too, I must say.

Kevin Stacey’s a scumfuck but he’s a good actor also. I laughed when they had him fucking Kim Basinger. I kept yelling at the screen, “But he’s a fag! Why are you making him fuck a chick?!”

          1. I thought it was interesting but difficult to follow. However not as difficult to follow as say Mad Max or something.

Actually, I would need to watch it again to get what’s going on.

  1. I loved that movie. Basinger won an Oscar for her performance. Spacey didn’t win, but he won for The Usual Suspects and American Beauty. Both released in the same era as La Confidential. I love 90s flicks.

Have you seen the following 90s movies?

    Fargo
    Reservoir Dogs
    Pulp Fiction
    The Usual Suspects
    Casino
    Heat
    American Beauty
    American History X
    Se7en

    Many more

    1. Seen:

      Fargo
      Reservoir Dogs
      Pulp Fiction
      American Beauty
      American History X
(but want to watch again as it’s been a while)
      Se7en

      Not seen yet:

      The Usual Suspects
      Casino
      Heat

I am on a ’90’s movie binge right now. I didn’t watch a lot of movies in that decade for some weird reason.

  2. You enjoyed L.A Confidential, and you seem like a big Los Angeles guy and Tarantino buff, you’d probably like new Tarantino film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The movie takes place in 60s L.A.

I don’t think a player like Robert had the time to watch any movies in the ’80s and ’90s. That’s because he spent the whole time partying with hot babes. He is the kind of person you base your movie scripts on.

Robert probably never heard the names of half of these movies. Only now in his ’60s, he’s catching up. On the subject of movie trivia, he’s behind the rest of us by a few decades!

A famous actor (I forgot the name) once said he NEVER watches any of his own movies.

          1. How’s it going nowadays with your rotten little SJW fruitcakes, the ones with a major entitlement acquired after a lifetime of feminist brainwashing?

  3. Somehow I remembered Seven as set in the Bay Area? Was it LA?

Another old LA set movie, at least the first half before it moves to Mexico is 10 with Dudley Moore and Bo Derek. An indulgent movie in how the rich lived in the Hollywood Hills and Malibu in the 70s.

    1. Se7en was indeed filmed and even set in LA, but it’s never mentioned in the movie, and one time they even say “upstate,” which seems to imply New York City. And indeed it looks very much like NYC, Pittsburgh, Philly, or someplace back east. It was mostly shot in downtown LA with rain machines lol.

You’ll notice the desert scene at the end is filmed in Lancaster in the Mohave Desert, and it’s supposed to be a short drive away from the city where the action is. So it couldn’t be the Bay Area, as there’s no desert for some ways from there.

Yes, I saw 10. I actually liked it very much!
