I live amongst first and second generation Hispanics. Spanish is spoken everywhere hereabouts, and this is in the US!
These Hispanics have very strict gender roles, although there is much less misogyny here in the US, which the women seem to appreciate, as they have more freedom.
But the men are unashamedly masculine in almost a caricature way. And the women are quite feminine.
Most of the men really love women and are sort of super-heterosexuals. The women are the same way.
The sexes openly flirt. Men openly flirt with women in public and no one much cares. If she doesn’t like it, she will just walk away.
The women seem to have the attitude that this is just the way men are, and there’s nothing you can do about it, so just accept it. Instead of screaming #metoo and making a fuss, which they would see as absurd and idiotic, these women just become cold to the man or totally ignore him and walk away.
I have noticed one thing though. They are happy! The men are very happy being hypermasculine, and the women are very happy being these super-feminine things. And everyone is straight – there’s pretty much zero homosexuality among men or women.
It’s like being straight and masculine is the “sweet spot” for men, and being straight and feminine is the “comfortable place” for women. This is considered “normal” behavior for humans (heterosexual and traditional gender roles), and maybe humans are most happy behaving in the ways that they always have. I mean tradition is tradition for a reason – mostly it is because tradition is what works, tried and tested by time.
