Where Was This Photo Taken?

Where was this photo taken?
No doubt most of you know the area in which this was taken, and you also know the name of the bridge. I will give you a clue. The area is part of a famous bay and the bridge is one of the most famous bridges in the world. But what I want to know is where this photo was taken. There are four possibilities:

  • On the bay side of the bridge on the south side of the bay.
  • On the bay side of the bridge on the north side of the bay.
  • On the ocean side of the bridge to the south of the bridge.
  • On the ocean side of the bridge to the north of the bridge.

Justify your answer. This is easy for me as I know this area quite well. In fact, I was just in this exact area 1 1/2 years ago. It will probably help if you are more familiar with the area, but you should be able to figure it out even if you are not familiar with the area by the simple process of deduction, Conan Doyle style, of course.

  1. Thank you for the puzzle, Robert. The wave height is low, which would be consistent with the bay side of the bridge OR the Pacific Ocean side on a very calm day. The city of San Francisco is on the south side of the Golden Gate bridge and the Marin headlands (and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area [GGNRA] ) are on the north side of the bridge. The asymmetry of the Golden Gate Bridge is that there is a small arch on the approach from the City of San Francisco side. Since that small arch is visible on the right-hand side of the photo and the Marin Headlands, which is a superb hiking area, and the GGNRA are visible on the left-hand side of the bridge, the view must be from the ocean side. I also see what appears to be a more urbanized area to the right hand side behind the bridge which could be Sausalito. Furthermore, the foreground on the right hand side of the photograph is undeveloped. Thus, I conclude that the photograph was taken from the ocean side of the bridge to the south of the bridge from the coast between Lands End Labyrinth and Marshall’s beach. (Landmark names from Google Maps.) To observe some of these details, I located a larger copy of Rasmus Andersson’s photograph at http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/campaigns/san_francisco_bay_area_and_delta_protection/index.html

    1. Thanks.
Seems to have been taken on the ocean side to the south of the bridge.
I figured the area to the right of the bridge was the bay side because of all of the municipal development on that side. The other side looked exactly like the Marin Headlands, which has almost no human development. If the photo was taken on the bay side, the area in the rear of the photo to the left of the bridge should have been all built up because most of the terrain in the bay is built up.
I was thinking it was taken around Pacifica somewhere.

  2. I have another teaser. Without checking a map, which city is further west, Los Angeles, CA or Reno, Nevada?

      1. He’s actually correct. Just have to compare coordinates.
        Reno NV: 39° 31′ 38″ N, 119° 49′ 19″ W
        LA: 34° 3′ 0″ N, 118° 15′ 0″ W
        I love interesting trivia.
Did you know Kuala Lumpur, Bali, Shanghai, and Perth share the same time zone?
Same goes with Pakistan and Yekaterinburg in Russia. Pakistan is only 30 minutes behind India.
Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus, some parts of Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg), Ukraine, Turkey, Romania, Israel, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Qatar, and Madagascar are on the same time zone.
How cool is that? A Finn and a Qatari setting up online meetings without having to check for time zones.
