Goethe seems to take the prize for “universal genius.” He may have had a 220 IQ, if that is even possible. A man as smart as Goethe comes around maybe once every 100 years or so.

Someone quizzed me once regarding a survey that was taken asking people who was the most important person in the history of the world. I was given a clue as to the person’s identity, telling me the answer was tied to an invention this most important person was associated with. After much thought, my answer was Johannes Guttenberg, because I felt the printing press was the most important invention in the history of the world. That thought turned out to be right (insofar as matching the survey respondents answers). I suppose when you think about it, the printing press is the most important invention in the history of the world.
Depends on your definition of intelligence, I guess.

As for intelligence: Any enquiry into a clear and succinct definition of ‘intelligence’ would require individuals who are buck stops here intellectually honest, to arrive at an accurate definition of ‘intelligence’. EoP MILED Clerk’s working hypothesis definition of intelligence would be an individual who (a) has the self awareness to know what they really want [i.e. not bulshitted by socio-cultural brainwashing bullshit]; (b) goes about cooperating with others to get what they want in an honourable [so as to avoid violating their self identity respect’] manner.
I don’t know what Goethe, Michelangelo, William Sidis wanted; so its hard to say whether they were intelligent in terms of EoP MILED Clerk’s definition of intelligence. I don’t know if Armin Meiwes was culturally brainwashed in terms of what he wanted: to be a cannibal; but even though what he wanted was considered anti-social; he focussed on getting what he wanted not by coercion or deception and manipulation; but honestly and sincerely and hence has no shame about his fully informed consent cannibal deeds [BTV: Interview with a Cannibal].
In terms of accomplishing some or all of what he wanted from the experience of being alive; Armin managed to do so honourably, retaining his self respect.

Other candidates (Mathematicians and Physicists): Gottfried Leibniz, Paul Erdos, Leonhard Euler, John Von Neumann, Richard Feynman, Isaac Newton. There are a number of others that might be comparable but I don’t know enough history to say. Goethe is certainly a giant, but it’s hard to weigh contributions made in different fields against one another.
Christopher Michael Langan in the late 1990’s was the most impressive individual that I’ve personally seen. Unfortunately, he never got the credit that he deserved for the incredible cognitive ability that he had around that time.
