I am having a really hard time understanding why the Republican Party and 99% of US conservatives hate this guy so much. He sounds like he’s right up their alley. I don’t get it.
I think I would take a social conservative like Putin who objects to a war against normality over a humanitarian bomber liberal any day.

I’m conservative and I’m a BIG fan of Putin. I know all of his interest are not necessarily mine but he does share many. Probably for some of the former Soviet Republics he’s the devil. Putin still wants some control or security say so over those areas. From a real politic view point this makes sense. We’ve broken all the security promises we made to the Russians. He’s fully in the right morally to oppose us.
He’s never opposed the West. They are his best friends. Their quarrels are internal and theatrical. All Russian oligarchs have big and important interests in the West, all their money is there, Putin simply cannot put in (pun!) danger these interests, he’s the representative of the Russian oligarchy after all!
And in reality Russia is a very apathetic, atheistic, westernised country. His conservative demagogy will not find a good soil there.
Russia & China were & still are the chief would be rivals to US/EU hegemony over US planetary domination. Plus a lot of (neo?) conservatives see the world in Cold War terms, regardless of that ruler’s own ideology. But there’s 1 thing for sure. when Obama tries to get tough, Putin still gets going.
Do not believe demagogues. They always lie. And Putin one of the best high-ranked demagogues of the modern time. He has been lying to Russians for 15 years. He’ll tell you about how he is a conservative tough guy and how he love Russians and will defend them anywhere (his famous March “Crimean speech”), but in reality he does not care either about conservatism or about Russia or common Russians. His main concerns are his personal power and the well-being of his dear oligarch friends. This is why he will always be also a friend of his West beloved “partners”. Their “world conflict” is purely theatrical.
