That’s about it I suppose. But what about our own personal histories. Same thing?

Not really. 90% of history focuses on inventions, the progress of medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, government infrastructure, etc.
Yes, our personal lives usually mirror history, with it’s ups and downs. However, Gibbon was claiming history was totally negative.

Certainly seems like sometimes doesn’t it? Follies and misfortunes.
I can think of the foolish things I did, pushing when I should have withdrew and the misfortunes it led to. Can’t change it now though. Sometimes it does seem you learn your lessons after you need them, when things have already gone wrong.
