A Comment on US Black Culture

Enkidu writes:

Nothing is stupider than US black ‘culture’. If your culture values violence as a solution to problem solving, crass materialism, instant gratification, sports above education, Bentleys and bling over benevolence, you are going to have a stupid, underachieving society. Blacks raised with the values of, say Jews or Koreans will probably do as well as anyone else.

Any comments? Note that this comment blasting Black folks per se and saying there is something wrong with them biologically. Instead he is just saying that their culture blows. A culture that, by the way, they created themselves. Any group can change their culture anytime they want to. Happens all the time. When can they start? Not now, yesterday!
I agree with everything he says in this post. Black culture simply leaves me cold in so many ways, when it doesn’t just out and out offend me or disgust me.
1. Violence as a way of solving problems. For someone like me, that is pretty much the ultimate outrage. I am the type of guy who has been repressing his aggression his own life. In fact, every day it is often sort of a battle to repress the aggression and keep the wolf in its lair. So people who not only lose it all the time but who actually think this is an intelligent way to solve your problems? Well, I have nothing to say.
2. Crass materialism. Well a lot of Whites are into that too. To the same degree? Who knows? I dropped out of the BS American money and status game a long time ago and I never looked back. If any money and status types end up crawling back into my life, I usually run them out after a bit. Not that I have any thing against stuff. I love it too. I love money too; only problem is I don’t have enough of it. However conspicuous consumption just strikes me as utterly insipid. Money well spent is valuable and one of life’s finer pleasures.
By definition, conspicuous consumption is not money well spent. You may as well just set bills on fire or flush them down the toilet. And the whole idea of judging other human beings based on how much money they make – the less money you make the more inferior you are and the more money you make, the more superior you are, well, all I have to say is that’s a Hell of metric by which to judge your fellow man! What would Jesus have said about those values?
3. Instant gratification. My whole life is has been all about delayed gratification. When I see idiots who can’t control themselves, my feeling often is that this is not a fellow human but a lower animal. That applies for people who see a plate full of chocolate chip cookies and can’t just eat one. As long as that plate is visible, they are pretty much going to gobble down the whole tray. To think like that seems to me to think like a dog or a mountain lion or some lower animal species, not a human. I equate “human” with self-control.
Sports over education. I have no real use for sports and if you are going to make some good money off of it, it’s a fine indulgence. Obviously I am a schoolhead, so I just can’t understand people who hate school, hate studying, hate reading or whatever. I just can’t relate, and my general attitude is that you are some sort of an idiot.
Bentleys and bling over benevolence. Well yeah. That’s Black culture. US Black culture isn’t particularly benevolent now, is it? Neither is White culture, but nevertheless, I am stunned by the kindness of White strangers that I see out in public. In fact, I have always depended on that kindness to renew my faith in man.
I don’t see the point of all the gold nonsense. You are dressing up like a circus clown or carnival performer. Why would dress like a clown or a carny and go about their daily business? A Bentley is an example of something you don’t even need. Utterly useless. It’s a high school dick comparison game, except it’s a car instead of a penis. I see someone with a car like that and I think, “Why would anyone want that?”
As you can see, I simply do not relate to US Black society in so many ways. It seems juvenile, insipid and incomprehensible when it’s not repellent.
The thesis of the commenter is that the problems of US Black society derive solely from its culture. I would not go that far, but I would say that the culture plays a big role. What’s so racist about saying that? Wasn’t Bill Cosby saying that a while back?
How do the rest of you feel?

  1. What you’re mostly describing here is a certain Black subculture. These elements exist in Black society, but Black society in the US isn’t defined just by this sort of stuff.

    1. And all this crap about gold and bling. This is rap imagery. Here is an experiment folks. Next time you are in public, take a mental notice of EVERY single black person you walk by or see. Look at them and see if they are wearing a bunch of bling and gold. You will find that few of them are. Maybe one will have a small gold neckless on, but I assume you guys are talking about guys like this: http://kevindriscoll.info/docs/presentations/hiphopapproach/xxlcover.jpg
And someone mentioned Bentleys? WTF??? How many fucking black people own Bentleys? Seriously, how many blacks can afford to drive a $100,000+ car? Gimme a break.

      1. That sort of thing (the gold, the grills, the rims but not the Bentleys) is fairly common where I live, but then most Blacks around here are more or less “ghetto nigs,” though I hate to use the word. I know some of them and I am actually friends with a few of them, but they are still pretty ghetto people nevertheless.

      1. 70% of black children born out of wedlock doesn’t mean most black women have an out of wedlock child. Fertility rates for married black women are on par with rates for married white women. Educated, unmarried black women basically aren’t even reproducing. Their fertility rate is lower than the lowest rates in Europe. If a disproportionate amount of births are to women who have them out of wedlock that could make it look like everyone in that group is having out of wedlock kids disproportionately.
An out of wedlock child also doesn’t automatically imply that a father isn’t present. Many people are simply opting not to marry and are cohabiting.
Fertility rates are in decline: http://www.nytimes.com/1998/07/01/us/birth-rate-falls-to-40-year-low-among-unwed-black-women.html

        1. It’s a good way to measure the impact on the children as a whole but not a good way to gauge behavior.
A better way to measure things is asking each woman if they gave birth to a child out of wedlock. This way one woman with 6 out of wedlock kids can’t screw up the average.

  2. The most obscenely materialistic individual I have ever seen is Floyd Mayweather. He calls himself Floyd ‘money’ Mayweather, frequently brags about his mansions, cars, diamond encrusted sunglasses and watches, private jet and a car dealer on 24/7 said he had bought 88 cars from him. He collects them- really classy looking cream/white rolls royces and Bentleys. His Hispanic opponents on those documentaries to hype the fight are always the complete opposite. I do feel that his materialism, exhibitionism and emphasis on his personal wealth comes out of an African American hip hop culture of showiness, crass materialism and braggadocio. (That aspect of African American culture probably isn’t event that old…right?) Although, to be fair, other rich black sportsmen are not this extreme and he does rub some poor black people up the wrong way.
Some people think he partly engineers or plays on this image so people pay to see him beaten. He’s the highest paid athlete in the world and a money making machine, earning up to $30 million per fight. He doesn’t lack future time orientation- he said on one of those shows he had a million dollars every month for the rest of his life.
The aspect of African American culture that I don’t like in particular is calling women bitches. I’ve said elsewhere that any culture that disrespects its own womenfolk that badly and crudely is a shit culture and has something badly wrong with it. Again, this aspect of African American culture is probably quite new and came along with rap and hip hop since the 80’s or 90’s.
*note, I’m commenting on African American culture, not black people, most of whom are African (and hopefully not being too influenced by some of the bad examples of black American rappers).

    1. Alphaunit wrote about Robert’s post:
“What you’re mostly describing here is a certain Black subculture. These elements exist in Black society, but Black society in the US isn’t defined just by this sort of stuff.”
That may apply to what I wrote too then. I did wonder that since I’ve had a lot of exposure to that subculture through tv and music but I haven’t been to America so I didn’t know how representative it was. I would imagine that some of these things, like calling women bitches, are fairly common among young black guys from the poor black neighborhoods, right? (the kind of neighborhoods most black people in America live) It seems to be so.

      1. Hi, Steve. Calling women “bitches” has always been pretty common among some Black guys. Where I grew up the men normally didn’t use that kind of language openly; I didn’t hear that word flung around all the time. But it’s become acceptable among younger Black people to call each other “bitch” in just normal conversation or even as a term of affection. Someone younger than I am is going to have to explain that one.

  3. Regarding sports over education, I think some studies have shown that there actually isn’t a lack of emphasis one education among black Americans as this was traditionally both a stereotype and used by liberals as an explanation for IQ results. Not sure tho.

    1. Yes, the “Black people don’t care about education” thing is totally wrong. Some Black people from dysfunctional environments might not care that much about education but this certainly doesn’t describe the average Black American.

      1. Correct Alpha. I don’t even know a single black person that doesn’t think education is important. And those in the family that have graduated from college are respected by all. It’s so frustrating how many people know so little about us. It just shows just how much segregation there is between the races. Sometimes I read what whites think about blacks and it’s obvious these people clearly have no black friends nor are they close to any black families. It’s like we might as well be aliens from another world.

        1. I totally agree. I spent at least a few years as a member of a black church (cause I ran into this guy, long story). Nobody white has any clue about black culture in my hometown, because people won’t socialize with most of them. Yes, the black culture where I live isn’t ghetto, but it isn’t some sellout one either.
Actually where I live, though it’s not surprising, is hostile to any cultural exchanges between blacks and whites period.

  4. ‘1. Well, I have nothing to say.’
    Fuggin A bubba.
We almost get to a point in society were everybody understands that you need to keep your hands to yourself. Then you get that moronic adolescent, Justin Bieber, spitting on people and assaulting them and playing cool about it.
Back to the drawing board. Faaahhhhk.

  5. Btw, if we are going to define a group of people by stereotypes, can the authors of these opinions please post statistical evidence that shows that these traits are carried by the majority of that group? It’s very hard to sit here and argue about opinions based on subjective observation and anecdotes.
I could say, “I don’t like Arab culture because they resort to terrorist violence”.
While it’s true that most terrorists are Muslims, the majority of Muslims aren’t violent and don’t support 9/11 style terrorism. Is it fair to say terrorism is a part of Muslim culture if most Muslims don’t support it? Does the fact that terrorism is almost exclusively Muslim override the fact that most their group doesn’t participate in this behavior?
How do we determine if a trait is part of a culture and how do we reconcile the conundrum that most members of that culture may not have that trait. Must is made of blacks showing bling. From a black perspective I see this as mostly a media and music creation. Real blacks I know and interact with aren’t walking around with thick gold chains on their neck and their fingers full of diamond encrusted rings. So how do we determine if this is part of black culture?

    1. Actually most if not all Muslims are “terrorists”, they are either violent or they are silent bystanders of violence since their religion is founded on a expansionist religion of conquest, theft, looting, syncretism, absorption and violence. If you look at Muslims just by genetics alone, at least 95% of them are at the bottom of the genetic pool of whatever population they converted out of. Infact Islam is a certifiable genetic test and IQ test, there is a 99.% chance that any average Muslim you meet will be dumb, ugly, and stupid. It really is a fact because I myself have experienced this phenomenon and pattern IRL. Not to mention the excessive bigotry, backwardness, culturul corrosion, close-mindedness, dialogue-shutting, zealotry, savagery and pseudo medieval parochial values that Muslims impose on non-Muslims once they are a majority pop in an area.
just wanted to point that out……

    2. The bling is part of Black culture because you are much more likely to see a Black man blinged out than a White person blinged out. It’s part of Black culture, but not all Blacks engage in it of course.
Btw, if we are going to define a group of people by stereotypes, can the authors of these opinions please post statistical evidence that shows that these traits are carried by the majority of that group?
At this point, have we not proven that most Blacks have short time preference and therefore a diminished ability to delay gratification as opposed to Whites who have longer time preference and more ability to delay gratification? Haven’t those candy bar studies settled that issue once and for all? In those studies, ~80-90% of the Black take the bar now instead of waiting a week for the bigger one. That’s a majority my friend.

    3. Lots of people. while not causing terrorism, are cheering it on. Many of these people are not Muslims in any shape or form. They’re simply angry about American imperialism.

  6. Historically, they were certain elements of black culture that had positive attributes. But as soon as enough of them entered the inner cities & then came also the drugs & Hip-Hop/Rap after a number of years, everything started going downhill from there. The current manifestation of what passes for african american culture has done nothing but bring american black back down to the base level.

  7. Can’t say I disagree but could it just be the decline of the US poor? Years and years of less help to them. is like friends have told me China is – “step down an alley and you’re in the 3rd world”. I hope that the USA never becomes that but i get the feeling its heading down that path.

  8. Interesting how people defend black people AND only AND special, the black people. I know many black people who are valuable people but the majority of blacks are dysfunctional. The adaptative older black culture was try to copy the mainstream (white) culture. The adaptative new black culture is in the true the subculture that encapsulate the mainstream black culture, that in the past try to emulate the mainstream culture, with church, familiar values, education etc. The number of children of very low iq blacks surpass completely the number of ”educated” blacks change the capitalistic demands. In the past, the focus of capitalists was the black family, today is young urban and violent (macho culture) blacks. Tv, specially in countries as USA is also a ”capitalist business”. Capitalism is good in a instable and ”crescent” societies to create competition, but capitalism is a suicidal regime because it destroy itself when down the quality of competitors.

    1. What’s also interesting is that you don’t say a word when people come in here making false claims about Black people or trashing Black people. Apparently that doesn’t bother you as much as Black people defending Black people.

      1. If was ANY OTHER people, YOU would not lost your time.
When ”false claims” and ”black people” expressions appear people like you also appear of their holes that you guys were hiding to try to ”explain” (or confuse) the impossible.
If (number two) you don’t read part of my comment, is evident and obviously there is a valued black people but they are the minority. There a degree of disfunctionality and the majority of blacks are more or less, dysfunctional, point.
I will not defend ”true” claims about black people. I always will defend the ponderation, wisdom and true.
The true, black people GENERALLY have low iq, psychopathic personality and are not equal to whites, indians, indian natives, ashkenazim or any other people (moreover, nobody this people are equal one which other) .
The ponderation, IMPORTANT MINORITY of black people are not dysfunctional.
The wisdom, what I can or should I do with this information?
answer, know the fact that i accept the reality of majority of a collective human populations don’t explain everything about a minority of individuals of these same group.

        1. I understand exactly what you said.
You put “false claims” in quotation marks as if it’s not possible for someone to make a false claim about Black people. I don’t appear out of any hole to try to confuse people about anything. I do what any normal person does when he feels he’s being misperceived or maligned.
You say that “true Black people” have low IQ, psychopathic personality and are not equal to other people. This is not only a false claim but it’s also insulting. But I’m supposed to be impressed that you say we’re not all like that.
It it were any other people, I wouldn’t waste my time defending them? Wrong. I don’t believe in all this “race” bullshit. If you read anything I write on this blog, you’d understand that by now.

        2. Alpha Unit, I don’t get why you want to post on this blog if you ‘don’t believe all this race bullshit’ (its a race realist blog) and given the things are are constantly written, including some of the stuff Bob writes. You’re an intelligent woman. I don’t know why you want to be associated or why you take some of the stuff if you don’t believe in it. Your posts are well written for sure but they don’t tend to be that related to the themes of the blog. Your involvement is a mystery to me.

          1. Hello, Steve. Five years ago Robert invited me to write on his blog. I had read some comments he made about negative experiences he had dating Black women, on a different blog. So I e-mailed him to basically say that “not all Black women are like that.” I didn’t expect him to reply, really, but I was pleasantly surprised that he did.
We began an e-mail correspondence and after seeing some of my writing he invited me to write for him. I agreed. His blog was officially anti-racist, so I began with the understanding that I’d be putting out an anti-racist POV on his blog. That was how it started.
Since then I’ve written about all sorts of things. Most of my articles over the last year or so have been about workers, especially workers in the various trades. This is a socialist, pro-worker blog, so that shouldn’t seem unusual.
I also believe in freedom of speech, so I accept that people are going to come here and say things I’ll disagree with or find offensive. As long as people abide by the comments rules, I can deal with that.

          1. “Alpha Unit” is just a Marine Corps term that means “a Marine’s wife.” That’s what I am.

        3. hi Alpha, I know Robert likes to be provocative but some of the stuff he writes sometimes…well, it’d be surprising if it didn’t offend you in some way.
anyway if you’re okay with it, you’re okay with it and you’re welcome to contribute as far as I’m concerned, not that I have any say in it.
You seem like a nice and gentle person (& that’s not to say ineffectual).

        4. Well is this still an antiracist blog? It is not antiracist in the PC sense, but I like to think that this is still pretty much at least a nonracist blog. I am not particularly interested in any nasty, hardcore racism of any kind, and I oppose racial discrimination. I think truth ought to be a defense against racism and I think one ought to be able to critique various races and ethnic groups – in particular, I think that their cultures ought to be open to critique, since theoretically they could change their culture any time they want to out of free will.
The guy who wrote the original definition of Liberal Race Realism that I still use said that one of the components of LRR is antiracism. The guy who wrote that was a White nationalist so he may be biased, but I got chased off most WN fora with accusations of being an antiracist. If someone called me an antiracist, it would certainly be a compliment. I am not really into hating whole groups of people.
The definition of racism that the PC nuts have set up is so crazy that almost all White people I know are racists to some degree according to this definition. That implies that there is something wrong with their definition of the word, I would say.
I find PC antis about as awful and annoying as really ugly naked racist types.
If I think that Black culture blows, I don’t see why I have to be called racist for saying that. Like I said, they can change any time they want to. In order to be an antiracist, must I love the culture of any wacky ethnic group out there? Why should I? Some cultures just simply suck if you ask me. Why is that a racist viewpoint.

        5. Alpha has her own private blog that I read all the time, plus we talk almost every day. I write everything that might be seen as racist with her and Tulio in mind, standing over my shoulder. If Alpha wasn’t here, I am afraid I might act a lot worse. She keeps me on good behavior. A while back, I was writing some truly inflammatory stuff and she got very angry with me. She has even resigned a few times only to come back. So if I am starting to go over the line, she pretty much lets me know and I reel myself back in.
I doubt if she is all that offended by most stuff I write as most stuff I write I try to tailor it so I won’t piss off Alpha.
I think Alpha might be a soft race realist. She acknowledges that at the moment there are differences on average between the races. She agrees that there are average intelligence and time preference differences between Blacks and Whites at the moment. She just doesn’t think any of that stuff that might exist is genetic. She is a strong environmentalist and she tends to think that any differences are probably environmental, or at least that the HBD’ers have not proved their case that this stuff is due to genetics and not environment.

  9. Violence as a solution? That’s Americans, right? There are very few brothers among those concealed carry lunatics. And popular culture has been teaching redemptive violence forever. Violence is indeed as American as cherry pie.

  10. Apha Unit ”I understand exactly what you said.”
    Better. 🙂
”You put “false claims” in quotation marks as if it’s not possible for someone to make a false claim about Black people. I don’t appear out of any hole to try to confuse people about anything. I do what any normal person does when he feels he’s being misperceived or maligned.”
You to be THE BLACK PEOPLE?? Hi, my name is Mars, Planet Mars. Hi, my names is Universe but my friends call me ”God”.
    I don’t know you, i can’t insult a person that i don’t know who is.
We talk about numerical abstractions. Is like a forest with hundred of trees. The word forest is a abstraction because related to non-individual conceptualization. There a individual trees. Black people or race or race only don’t exist. But, the individual black, no matter your iq, personality traits or whatever carry all ”genetic history of your people” and have more predispositions to pass to its descendence its traits, positive and negative.
Race is like as ”mobile territoriality”. The race and its limited universe survive in individuals and not in groups.
False Claims about black people ” blacks are smart than whites” or ”blacks are ON AVERAGE equal in intelect to whites”.
Alpha Unit@ “You say that “true Black people” have low IQ, psychopathic personality and are not equal to other people. This is not only a false claim but it’s also insulting. But I’m supposed to be impressed that you say we’re not all like that.“
TRUE BLACK PEOPLE??? not, ”THE TRUE” , black people TEND to have low iq, psychopathic personality and (indeed, obviously) are not equal to other people AS WELL others peoples are not equal one which other. This is the basic of biology, genetics, anthropology, whatever-related-stuff and REALITY, people are not equal one which other, SPECIALLY, the human beings.
Alpha unit ”It it were any other people, I wouldn’t waste my time defending them? Wrong. I don’t believe in all this “race” bullshit. If you read anything I write on this blog, you’d understand that by now.”
YOU don’t believe, but you have some personal prove about this stuff?
YOU is not the reality, is not the true, sorry.
What do you think that happen in the future about black people in USA or in any other place??
the EDUCAAAAITION will save them and make them smart??
    I want your opinion.
Smart people (all kind of smart people) don’t appear by magic or by (magic) education. Real smart people, the smartest, is smart and don’t need to prove it by any psychometric test or anything else.

    1. You are misunderstanding me. Races exist. But races are far more alike than they are different.
If you are going to tell me “X is a function of race,” then you’re going to have to back it up.

      1. I don’t say that race don’t exist. I say about numerical abstractions were race don’t exist because it is a compilation and accumulation of similar traits, as all numerical abstractions. To race there, the individual need disappear. But, is more complex. I claim, ”individuals carry the historical genome of their race” (or races). So, even the outliers as very smart blacks or emotionally creative asians, have the predominant genes of their races. Is like a group of birds, they flying in many directions but in the end they finish unit in their own core of spectrum. Race as mobile territoriality.
You can try to be other, but their i move you again to yourself. Genes=you
You need to see it with polidimensional perspectives on who you is located in border of this perspectives.
Explain better what do you try to say, with examples etc.
Depend of you perspective, have many ways to claim correctly
”races are far more alike than they are different.”
All of this claims in a certain point, to be right, but the true, specially the ”abstract true” is the sum of all this perspectives. So, to be right if you can conclude their claims, but to be incomplete and quasi-wrong if you try to prove the reality, neutral reality, and reality by excelence.

        1. Atypical families can stick together in reproduction, creating their own mini clusters. If races can have different averages, why not families? Highly intelligent families often reproduce with each other for generation, sometimes to the exclusion of other families. Sometimes the same is true of creative or wealthy families.

      2. race doesn’t exists. the only separations in the homo sapian family are haploid groups. I believe there are 13 groups world wide. the old race definitions were done by physical attributes. saying somebody is racially black when they could be only 30 percent African black is incorrect. within 10 generations from now there will be so much mixing it will be difficult to still claim specific races. no group is so isolated that barriers such as mountain ranges will keep the human family from becoming closer than its present 98 percent related world wide.

        1. Thanks for telling me about the haploid groups. And I totally agree that the forces driving people together are stronger than these so-called racial barriers.

        2. Right, races don’t exist but ”groups world wide” exist. Doesn’t matter the name. Groups have been sufficiently isolated to produce all real differences that we see today.

  11. ”Atypical families can stick together in reproduction, creating their own mini clusters. If races can have different averages, why not families? Highly intelligent families often reproduce with each other for generation, sometimes to the exclusion of other families. Sometimes the same is true of creative or wealthy families.”
    TruthTeller99,
Well, race is like a enlarged families. Yes, is like ”matrioshkas”, individuals have averages (personality, intelligence, altruism, etc), families have averages, peoples have averages, races have averages, species etc… universe(s) have average(s).
Creative families have much more cases of mental disorders. Siblings of patient with schizophrenia are overrepresented in creative artistic professions accord a longitudinal study in Sweden. Siblings of patients with bipolar disorders are overrepresented in creative scientific professions.
Engineers and computer programmers families have more cases of autism.
