Phenotypical Differences Between NE Asians and SE Asians

Dave Coe writes:

What about in terms of looks? I personally find Northeast Asian women more attractive, but all the white guys who go to Asia seem to go the Southeast.

The Mongoloid race is newer in SE Asia than in NE Asia. In NE Asia, there was a full transition from Australoid to Mongoloid 9,000 YBP. In SE Asia, the full transition occurred as late as 2,000 YBP, hence you do tend to see more Australoid features in the SE Asian Mongoloids because the transition was so recent. I suppose to be crude you could say that SE Asians retain more archaic features, and NE Asians have fewer archaic and more progressive features. There is a lot of overlap though. I can’t believe how Chinese many Filipinas look. I am not sure why this is. Possibly the Taiwanese aborigines from which they are heavily derived had a heavy “Chinese” type component. There has also been a heavy infusion of more modern Chinese types in the past 900 years. There was a particularly heavy wave 900 years ago. Vietnamese women also have a heavily “Chinese” component. What happened in SE Asia in the last 2000 years is that there was a very heavy infusion of probably more progressive Chinese phenotypes from southern China that moved in via waves into mainland SE Asia and at least the Philippines. The indigenous SE Asians were more archaic Australoid types  – more properly seen as “Melanesian” types who nevertheless had been transitioning towards a more modern Mongoloid type for a long time. The waves just helped this along in a big way. The Thais and Lao for instance are primarily derived from a heavy wave from Yunnan 900 years ago that mixed in with indigenous types. In Vietnam, a huge wave overran the area 2,200 years ago via the Cantonese region and subsequently interbred with indigenous types. “Montagnards” are a good example of an indigenous type in Vietnam. The genetics of Malaysia, Burma, Cambodia and Indonesia are a lot more complicated.

  1. I am a Southern Chinese from Fujian, speaking Minnan dialect, 3rd generation in Singapore. We are same race as Taiwanese and Teowchew. According to research, Fujian is the homeland of proto-Malay. The proto-Malay sailed from there and populated the entire pacific Islands. These sailors occupied from Easter Island in East Pacific to Madagascar just of Eastern Africa.
The Minnan tribe has a great deal of Malay blood. The admixture continues until today in Taiwan. Minnan Chinese has the 2nd highest IQ among Chinese people, behind, those Wu/Yue tribe (Shanghai-nese), the Central-East Chinese. The Cantonese has the same or maybe slightly higher than us. But historically, the Minnan people produces more imperial scholars, until recently where Cantonese closes the gap somehow. The Cantonese very likely has a lot on Malay genes in them as well.
The Minnan, Cantonese is closer to SE Asian than Northern Chinese.
The Minnan Chinese has higher IQ than Malay and Northern Chinese. I think the main reason could be constant warfare in Northern China impede finer intellectual activity. The Minnan has higher IQ than its Malay cousin probably because we are exposed to higher level of civilization earlier.

    1. I suspect proto-Malay may look like Thai/Burmese/Khmer. I am a Minnan Chinese. Most people do not think I look like Chinese. Most commented that I look like Burmese or Thai. The Malay in Taiwan look almost like Chinese.
The Malay in part of Borneo, like Kadazan, Iban can look almost like Chinese. Pockets of Javanese and Filipinos look very close to Chinese. The further Malay from China, the further Malay look like Australoid.
I suspect that the Pacific and Indian ocean Islands could have its own negritto or Australoid people. When the Malay arrived, it quickly displaced the local languages and marriage with locals. That give them a Australoid look. Probably that lowers their IQ somehow.
It is generally true that North East Asian are smarter than South East Asian. I wish to highlight that in certain context, blood cousin of SE Asian could be as smart as NE Asian.
Cantonese and Minnan/Taiwanese IQ are on par with NE Asian.

      1. …not that they are all wacky. Some are serious and over there because of a connection with some lama. I have heard that there are a quite lot of wacky ones though, speaking aloud about the latest practice they learned. Mingling with the many stray dogs.

  2. This from the same guy that said Koreans had more in common with white people than they do with Chinese… East Asians are derived from Southeast Asians, not the other way around.

    (July 19 2010)
“In a systematic sampling and genetic screening of an East Asian–specific Y-chromosome haplogroup (O3-M122) in 2,332 individuals from diverse East Asian populations, results indicate that the O3-M122 lineage is dominant in East Asian populations, with an average frequency of 44.3%. Microsatellite data show that the O3 haplotypes are more diverse in Southeast Asia than those in northern East Asia.[2] This suggests a southern origin of the O3-M122 mutation to be likely.”
“More than 90% of East Asian (EA) haplotypes could be found in either Southeast Asian (SEA) or Central-South Asian (CSA) populations and show clinal structure with haplotype diversity decreasing from south to north. Furthermore, 50% of EA haplotypes were found in SEA only and 5% were found in CSA only, indicating that SEA was a major geographic source of EA populations.”

Also there was little ‘Chinese Mixing’ into ISEA.. Again likely the other way around through the Chams…

You should leave the population genetics and anthropology to Razib and Dienekes.
