How 30 Years of Free Trade and Classical Economics Ruined the US Economy

Evening in America, from the American Conservative magazine. I never thought I would be quoting these paleocons, but you know what? They’re actually right! Our elites have sold us a bill of goods and ruined our economy in the process. And the mindset of these elites remains that of the entire Republican Party, the entire US corporate media and much, if not most of the Democratic Party. It’s a failed elitist ideology that only benefits the rich and some corporations and hurts the US nation as a whole. But neoliberals have alliance to no real geographical land, only the evanescent Land of Profit. They will sell out the homeland in a New York minute if the price is right. To some extent, this is true of capitalists in general. As Marx said, the capitalist will sell you the very rope you will use to hang him with, if only to make a quick buck before he dies. There is something to be said for national capitalists and national capitalism. It’s a German idea with some heavy baggage, but even a broken clock is right a couple times a day.

  1. One of the most odious of the globaloneyists, Thomas PM Barnett, periodically has bragged on his blog about how how the US sold out its workers to boost China and created the best of all possible worlds. Of course he doesn’t use the term “sold out”, and his last ditch, frequently triggered safety net rationale, for all the job security transfer, even as China and his erstwhile hero Obama fail him on the foreign relations scene… is that that hasn’t been another world war since 1945.

  2. “I never thought I would be quoting these paleocons, but you know what? They’re actually right”
Yes, on many things they are. I’ve admired the writings of Pat Buchanan for a long time, but a little part of me died when he started supporting Sarah Palin.
” But neoliberals have alliance to no real geographical land, only the evanescent Land of Profit. They will sell out the homeland in a New York minute if the price is right”
The merchant has no country – Thomas Jefferson
As I’ve said before, for most of the world the ideas of blood and soil, kith and kin are the best to hold on to.
“There is something to be said for national capitalists and national capitalism”
There’s a hell of a lot to be said for national capitalism. There’s even more to be said for nationalist populism.

    1. for most of the world the ideas of blood and soil, kith and kin are the best to hold on to.
If only the West would follow the world’s example in this regard. This whole neoliberal, border-less, credal nation crap needs to come to an end.

    2. Paleocons-You mean like dinosaurs?
Pat Buchanan is a douche. His radical rhetoric can only serve to alienate sane people.

      1. I certainly don’t agree with everything Pat Buchanan has said, but I don’t believe it is correct to call him a douche. At many times he has been the lone voice with any coverage who has opposed american wars and has opposed free trade and shipping american jobs overseas.

        1. What just pisses me off so much is that the left really doesn’t give a shit about anyone but their precious “victim groups.”
To the extent that they even are bothered about outsourcing, it’s only because they think that sweatshop workers are being exploited in 3rd world countries.
Never mind the fact that Americans are losing their jobs or having their wages depreciated.
Oh, and they also love illegal immigration, which has been splendid for the average worker.
Let’s face it, only paleocons like Pat Buchanan or Paul Craig Roberts are willing to tackle outsourcing and insourcing, and actually articulate real economic problems.
That being said, Pat Buchanan isn’t my favorite paleocon. The late Sam Francis and Paul Craig Roberts are two of my favorite thinkers.

    1. I just find it so interesting the way Roberts writes simultaneously for both VDare and Counterpunch, which are about as far apart ideologically as they come.

  3. “What just pisses me off so much is that the left really doesn’t give a shit about anyone but their precious “victim groups.””
This of course traces back to the type of people who occupy the higher postions of the american left.
Who oppreses victim groups? Not the rich, but the whites. So the bourgeosie leftist can of course blame all whites for oppression. This means that he can pass the consequences of AA and other programs down the ladder to the poorer parts of the white populace and stop them from affecting himself and his family.
Consider for a second if poor whites were recognized as a ‘victim group.’
Who would be their oppressors then? Surely not the minority groups. This leaves on group left as oppressors: rich whites. The whole multicultural enterprise is meant to prevent the ‘leveling’ of rich whites from occuring. Hence the concentration on ‘victim groups.’

    1. Good point, Wade.
While these Cultural Marxist types like Tim Wise incessantly agonize over their “white privilege” and the inability to “unmake their whiteness,” they continue to hold on to the fat part of their paychecks and live in nice houses.
I mean, if they really want to “give up their privilege,” heck, they ought to abandon their nice houses and give up their paychecks to non-whites. But of course they won’t do that.
They’ll continue to use their precious “people of color” as a buffer against the disgruntled white masses.

  4. Hey! What about the role of nerds, women, blacks, Jews, natives, Mexicans in the relative decline of the American worker? You can’t put it all on Korea, motherfuckers!
Korea has liberated the WORLD, motherfuckers. And the American worker is a sinner.
I all for fixing the people, not the system. The system is an ass. Evolution over creation.

  5. One of the most odious of the globaloneyists, Thomas PM Barnett, periodically has bragged on his blog about how how the US sold out its workers to boost China and created the best of all possible worlds.
    “Globaloneyists.” Good one.
Best of all possible worlds? When American consumption collapses, as is happening now, millions of third world people will starve. I’m sure the Tim Wises of the world will blame whitey for what the collaboration between neoliberals and cultural fake leftists brings about. I for one won’t be listening.
I’ve seen people on the CRT blogosphere virtually gloating about the immiseration of white working class people. They obviously aren’t thinking of the consequences. People making a dollar a day are not going to replace the Western market for plastic doodads. Millions of unemployed whiteys = millions if not billions of dead brown folks.

    1. I’ve seen people on the CRT blogosphere virtually gloating about the immiseration of white working class people
      Really?
Ha, and they wonder why most whites hate their guts and don’t want to listen to them.
Critical Race Theorists are pieces of shit.

    2. La Fleur,
Where are your numbers? I believe whites are consuming as much as ever. That’s one of the reasons I like whitey. Can always count on whitey (sing it) to ret-aaa-iiilll.
Contrary to the adage that “Retail Sucks”, it’s quite good. Love the shit. I find a visit to Walmart as inspirational as a visit to a great library. People have been predicting the death of the white consumer for decades, centuries even. It doesn’t die. LOL.
BTW, brownies are not dependent on the Western consumer for their sustainability. In fact no one really is. The western consumer is just a lovely “thing-in-itself” wonder.

  6. Barnett believes in a possible capitalist one-world utopia. He’s adopted many non-white kids from several third world countries. We’re not talking about the Angelena Jolie set here, we’re talking about how squares can also have character eccentricities, (defects) though usually not as dangerous as Barnett’s, considering his past influence in the Plutocratic-Strategic world.
Barnett has termed the globalized countries the “Functioning Core,” or simply “the Core.” The other countries are part of the “Non-Integrating Gap,” or simply “the Gap.” The Gap has been shrinking as globalization has expanded. Since most terrorists seem to come from the Gap, he believes that the American military should focus on building partnerships with “seam states,” countries bordering the Gap, to stabilize those regions. Stable states would bring more investment and more connectedness with the outside world, therefore progressively shrinking the Gap. The end result of all of this, if it proves to be successful, would be nothing less than the end of interstate warfare on the planet, and probably a significant reduction in intrastate warfare and other problems like terrorism.

The glibness in which Barnett writes about how the US worker had to share the wealth (via outsourcing etc) to set up this possibility of Materialist Elysium hints at why William Lind, a nationalist strategian rival, called Barnett’s idealized world Hell.
