Thomas Jefferson, Communist

“Another means of silently lessening the inequality of property is to exempt all from taxation below a certain point, and to tax the higher portions of property in geometric progression as they rise.” – Thomas Jefferson (3rd President of the United States)

According to the Tea Party (and consequently the Republican Party, since the Tea Party is simply the base of the Republican Party), progressive taxation is redistribution of wealth, a Marxist concept. Anyone supporting it is either a socialist or a Communist. Actually both, since all socialists are Communists according to these weirdos. As a Commie, I am very proud to have Thomas Jefferson as part of our movement.

  1. Good post, Robert.
At the same time, while people on the left are willing to use Thomas Jefferson as a rhetorical tool against religion and to support progressive economic policies, they also DESPISE him.
Leftists despise all of the founding fathers. You ask a leftist what comes to mind when you say “founding fathers,” and they’ll reply, “slave owners, Indian killers, sexists, wealthy pigs, etc.”
Never mind that without these oppressive founding fathers, they probably wouldn’t be living in a comfortable 1st world country, with freedom of speech and all that other good stuff.
    Ah, the irony’s so priceless!

      1. I would argue the opposite. Since the founding fathers are used by every nature of right winger to justify the imposition of a police state, flat taxation, unmitigated capitalism, bank deregulation, militarization, the misuse of the founding fathers is clearly mainly on the right.
As a socialist, I see the founding fathers are the original left wingers. They were not only progressive and socialist for their time, they were revolutionaries. Too bad the American right has distorted what they stood for into some endorsement of 1984 meets the Robber Barons – The irony is I doubt Jefferson, Franklin or any of the others would have much in common with bozos like Palin, W., Chency, Beck or Limbaugh …. Remember it was the work of the FF and the French Liberals that gives us Marx, Keynes and ultimately Friedman. If not for them, we would be still singing good save the Queen.

  2. I really need to study the founding fathers. I found early American history so boring in school. Gore Vidal did as well, which is part of the reason he wrote some historical novels about them.
Glenn Beck’s hero Thomas Paine was a commie too:
    http://mydd.com/users/yodafone/posts/paine-was-a-socialist
    His proposal:
To create a national fund, out of which there shall be paid to every person, when arrived at the age of twenty-one years, the sum of fifteen pounds sterling, as a compensation in part, for the loss of his or her natural inheritance, by the introduction of the system of landed property:
And also, the sum of ten pounds per annum, during life, to every person now living, of the age of fifty years, and to all others as they shall arrive at that age.

    In today’s money:
Later on, Paine also argues for the same 10 pound payment to be made to the disabled. By comparison, a housewife could make between 6 and 8 pounds for a year. 10 pounds would amount to approximately $18,000 USD today, accounting for wage increases between the 18th century and today. By comparison, a full-time worker at US minimum wage today would earn $14,872, minus payroll taxes. Paine is also asking for a lump-sum payment of 15 pounds, which would amount to approximately $27,000 USD today, enough to go to school or start a small shop.

    1. Its amazing how many great thinkers would be appalled at the modern conservative movement …. Hence why the right attracts so many “great” minds I guess. …

  3. Definition of a Republican: somebody who hates government but who expects his Social Security cheque to arrive on time.
Many seniors are Reps. How many of them turn down Medicare?
Note that Thomas Jefferson is talking about the taxation of property, not of income. In today’s world, most taxes are on income rather than on property. Sales taxes are also taxes on income.
Suppose that someone makes 10 dollars per hour and that a widget costs 1 dollar. Without taxation, he can earn 10 widgets per hour. Now, he has to pay a 20% income tax. That reduces his disposable income to 8 dollars per hour, so that he can only buy 8 widgets with one hour of work. Alternatively, the government could levy a sales tax of 25%. That would increase the price of widgets to 12.5 dolars. With his wage of 10 dolars per hour, one hour of work now enables him to buy 8 widgets.
Conservatives often overlook that both a sales tax and an income tax reduce the return on work.
    Cheers. James

  4. nice find. i love how these Republicans commit hateful legislative acts against the poor, but they proclaim to LOVE Jesus.

  5. All those things the leftists you (BAG) mention say are true about at least some of the founding fathers. So what? They’re also among the most brilliant political minds to ever draw breath. Whatever their personal qualities, if we had somehow managed to follow their plans at least in principle, this would be a much different and better place. Let’s take Jefferson for example. If we had listened to him, there would be no American imperialism. There would be no propagandist corporate media monopoly.

  6. by todays standards Jefferson would be a far right neo nazi white supremacist watchamacallit racist bigot. he once stated that blacks are inferior in intelligence and that its impossible for whites and blacks to live under the same rule. he is right btw. just look at Zimbabwe or South Africa or Detroit or Clayton County.
