I get comments and emails from totally crazy people from time to time, that’s what happens if you have significant Internet presence. They usually want me to help them out of their dire predicament, which involves folks spying on them, following them, persecuting them, and whatnot.
This one is fairly typical. I am justifying running it by not releasing his name. Apparently a former solider in Iraq, but you never know with these guys. Paranoid conspiracy involves 9-11 and his service in Iraq, if it even occurred.
I say paranoid schizophrenia due to the disjointed nature of the writing, not the paranoia. Manic psychosis can look very similar to paranoid schizophrenia and often you need to really look hard to tell them apart. I think manics probably make more sense than this though.
Schizophrenia has a characteristic thought disorder about it that is not replicated in other illnesses. Mania has thought disorder too, but it doesn’t look like schizophrenia.
Thought disorder means something like, “Doesn’t make sense when they talk.” I mean really doesn’t make sense, not someone who is eccentric, not following the flow or over your head. Often, you have to experience it to understand precisely what it looks like, but if you’ve ever talked to a wild-eyed homeless person, I think you know what I mean.
Thought disorder in schizophrenia is controversial. My opinion is that schizophrenia always must have thought disorder, else it is not schizophrenia.
Schizophrenia is a much misunderstood illness, and your average moron doesn’t know jack about it. In fact, your average college grad doesn’t know jack about it. Your average 150 IQ American doesn’t know jack about it. This is unfortunate, as the illness is not extremely hard to dx, even for an amateur like me.
I have noticed that “regular Americans” are constantly accusing relatively normal persons of being schizophrenics, especially eccentrics or neurotics who have that “off in their own world” look about them.
Bottom line: schizophrenics do not make sense. Verbally, behaviorally, in every way. This is apparent, even in mild cases, after a bit. I had a schizophrenic best friend for about a year, a 1/2 Black guy, and now I feel I know the illness like the back of my hand.
Also note a tendency, that, as people get more and more unhinged, they start typing in all caps more and more. This is probably due to the urgency of the message – they really need to get the word out, dammit! Often they start blowing off punctuation and typing in endless run-ons. I’m not sure what that’s all about, as I haven’t been psychotic for even one minute in my life.
