Who Watches More Porn?

Great post from the very interesting Congenial Times blog on porn and who in the Hell watches that horrible stuff anyway. The author is gay, and he notes that gay men always have a big porn collection and are known to follow the careers of porn stars like others follow baseball. Hey, good for them! But he points out that the straight men* he knows usually don’t have any porn collections. Reason for that is, IMHO, that straight culture, namely women, won’t let us collect that stuff. Our straight male friends look down on it too. They come over, see porn on the computer or VCR and right away, they make some snide remark about spanking the salami. Well, yeah? I guess this doesn’t happen in gay male culture because apparently slamming the salmon is viewed positively in that culture. Good for them. It’s not really viewed positively in straight culture, even though polls show that 9 Women think whacking the weasel is stupid, unless they are watching us do it on cam, which seems to be an increasingly popular pastime with straight women. Straight women also hate porn, pretty much. They don’t like it themselves and they don’t like that we like it. They steal our collections and delete them from our computers. They find it insulting that we look at chicks who are not them, which means they compete with the porn chicks and think they lost the race. The whole flogging the log enterprise is regarded in straight culture with snickers and overtones of, “Boy, you sure are a loser, huh?” There seems to be an age thing here, as young women 19-30 or so seem to be a lot more into porn than those my age or my Mom’s age, who pretty much hate it. I think the reason is that young women are free to watch the stuff, and it’s easily available on the Internet. Since they are free to watch it, a lot of them have, and  lots of them found that they like it. I notice that most of these young women don’t watch lots of porn though. Just sometimes. I haven’t heard of many straight female porn addicts, but it would be interesting to find one if they exist. Female sex addicts definitely exist. They’re usually about age 20-34 or so in my experience, but I guess there might be older and younger ones. My neighbor complains that he doesn’t mind having sex up to 5 times a day with his 20 yr old girlfriend, but dammit, she wants it 6-9 times a day. Poor guy. All of us guys should have such misfortunes. Congenial Times finds that in a survey, bi men watch porn the most of all, then gay men close behind, and straight men way behind the others. This figures, as most of the bisexual men I have known are really extreme sex addicts of the worst kind who won’t take no for an answer. They’re often quite conflicted, lie a lot, deny the male sex part of their game, and have all sorts of issues with the women in their lives. Gay men always struck me as happier than these guys. And yeah, they do try to seduce straight men. So much so, that friendships with them are essentially impossible. On to the women. Straight women watch porn the least of all, and lesbians are 4 Anyway, it’s nice to see that gay guys are so positive about porn and apparently the attendant yanking and cranking. As a 1960’s style sexual liberationist “do it in the streets” type, I’m opposed to all forms of antisexual behavior. All forms of sexual expression, all the way from monogamy to as many partners as you want with whoever you want to swinging to celibacy, should be fully accepted, no questions asked. Obviously there are risks with promiscuity, but it’s not a moral issue. Masturbation, like most kinds of sex, is lots of fun for both sexes and all ages, and condemning it is de facto antisexual. As for me, well, I’m 51, and not only that, I’m on a drug that hammers my sex drive. It’s actually a good thing, because I’m such a sex addict that without those sexual speed bumps, I’d probably be surfing porn 12 hours a day and not getting a whole lot else done. Even fun addictions are a millstone, and it’s better to be free. *Robert Lindsay is a straight male who couldn’t be gay if he wanted to.

  1. I dont know if you meant that statistic fully seriously, but in any case I really doubt that 97% of men masturbate with any regularity. I’m pretty sure that the percentage of men who are impotent is high enough by itlsef to make that impossible. Moreover, most men are married, so one would have to assume that at least 94% of married men are unfaithful to their wives (at least by the strictest Christian definition; not every woman would take excpetion to their husband’s porn habits). I think the 97% figure must have come from a poll of teenagers or something, or be phrased as something such as “Have you ever masturbated?”.

  2. Also, self-selection error and stuff. How many asexuals/terrified Christian teens/etc are going to come take a poll about masturbation?

  3. You’ve never heard the theory that most “bisexual” males are actually homosexual but suppressing for social conventions/rewards?

  4. That’s not true. Some bisexual males are gay, but others are really attracted to both sexes. We can tell this when we test them. When we test males, a number of them show significant attraction to the same sex. I’m not sure how many, but it’s not 4%.

  5. I agree that gay men have a much more positive attitude toward masturbation than straight men. In the gay community it can even be a social event. Like, if you’re talking to a guy you find attractive online, it’s not uncommon to ask him to come over, watch porn with you and beat off. And why not? It’s fun, it helps you to get to know someone, and doesn’t put you at risk for catching some disease. I’ve actually made good friends this way.

  6. Hey that’s great Mark. Too bad more women aren’t like this. Although nowadays its not uncommon at all to meet women online and they pretty much demand that you turn your cam on, then they get your clothes off and want to see you jack. If they have a cam too, they will turn it on and do it for you too. I’ve never engaged in mutual masturbation with a woman in meatspace. You would think they might be into it, since they are really worried about catching diseases.
I hear there are some straight guys who do this too. Young guys around 20 or so. Their sex drive is extremely high, and women just don’t put out that much if you’re not going to marry them or move in with them. So these guys would go over to other guy’s places, watch porn and everyone jacks. They don’t touch each other at all, because they consider that gay. But everyone jacking they don’t consider gay at all. I couldn’t handle it myself, but I agree there’s nothing really gay about it.

  7. Yeah, well Robert I can speculate a slew of ways the candidates being tested might not be accurate samples of the supposed phenomenon.

  8. Well, a sex therapist whose name eludes me now published a book detailing his career late in life. He had tested 100’s of males and females over decades. Up to 50% of females are attracted to their own sex. I’m not sure what the figure was for males, but I think it was around 1/3 of all males have some significant homosexual attraction. The typical heterosexual male has a profile on these tests of maximal response to het stimuli and minimal response to gay stimuli, so if you want to include minimal responses, it’s clearly a majority of males have some small gay attraction.

  9. Hey Robert is that drug you are on a SSRI? SSRIs destroy your sex drive. I read your other posts on OCD, and I read that you took Anafranil for it, but I am not sure if tricyclic antidepressants hammer your sex drive. My mom has OCD and she has to take an SSRI, and she said it destroys her sex drive.
In response to “Well as for me, Im 51, and not only that, Im on a drug that hammers my sex drive.”
